I doubt if general sonthi, the most powerful person in thailand right now could be used as a puppet by anyone, not even the king. I think the islamic background is merely just a coincidence, and as you can see it does not stop the bombing and killing in the south at all.
Sonthi was closed to the King and at the time Thaksin was taking care of the south but the WORLD said!@ HUMAN RIGHT !!!HUMAN RIGHT!!!! the Sonthi was put in charge of the south....
Bung sondhi is just a puppet, a lousy one. he was in charged of the south because of his religion.

I agree, it doesnt make a lot of sense because the voilence in the south continues
so the assumption he made has no base.
