The Cambodian government announced on Wednesday night it had appointed Thaksin an economic adviser, riling Bangkok, which is trying to bring Thaksin home to serve a two year jail sentence handed down by the Supreme Court, three years after he was ousted in a coup.

"We have recalled the ambassador as the first diplomatic retaliation to let the Cambodian government know the dissatisfaction of the Thai people," Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva told reporters.

"Last night's announcement by the Cambodian government was harmful to the Thai judicial system and really affected Thai public sentiment," Mr Abhisit said.

He said aid to Cambodia would also be halted, but checkpoints along the border between the two countries would remain open.; Ordinary commerce between Thai and Camvodian people would not be affected.

A government official said earlier that the ambassador to Phnom Penh would be recalled by Thursday evening in retaliation for Cambodia's "interference" in Thai politics.

"The reason is that the appointment of Thaksin is considered interfering in our internal politics because Thaksin is still actively involved in politics," Chavanond Intarakomalyasut, secretary to Thailand's foreign affairs minister, told AFP.

Democrat Party spokesman Thepthai Senpong said Thaksin's new job with the Cambodian government was no more than a consolation gift from a friend.

Mr Thepthai said he did not think Thaksin would actually do anything.

It was an internal matter for the Cambodoian government and the Thai government would not try to interfere.

However, if Thaksin happened to stay in Cambodia, the government would have to seek his extradition, he said.

Interior Minister and Bhumjaithai Party leader Chavarat Charnveerakul said Thaksin's appointment would be unlikely to affect the Thai economy.

"Even if he were not economic adviser to the Cambodian government, he would still try to get closer to Thailand," Mr Chavarat said.

Finance Minister Korn Chatikavanij said he was more worried about what damage Thaksin would inflict on the Cambodian economy.

Thaksin said on his that he felt honoured by the appointment and thanked Prime Minister Hun Sen.

“I have just received a copy of King Sihamoni’s royal appointment from Mr Hun Sen. I thank Mr Hun Sen for giving me such an honour. But I would have more enjoyment if I ccould work to eradicate Thai people’s poverty,” Thaksin tweeted on his twitter account on Thursday morning.

In a statement read on state television yesterday, the Cambodian government said all charges against Thaksin were “politically motivated”, and said it would not allow his extradition to Thailand if he decides to stay in Cambodia or travels in and out of Cambodia to fulfill his duties.

Noppadon Pattama, a former foreign minister and close associate of Thaksin, said Mr Hun Sen appointed Thaksin economic adviser because he could see his potential.

Cambodia has nothing to lose and will gain tremendously in economic development for being coached by an expert.

It's much more than that. Doubtful that Thaksin will be the real khmer economic adviser. Looks like Cambodia will lose thai ambassador to the kingdom soon. Thaksin and Hun Sen share some thing in common both have something against the current Jek government. Both joint force to piss of Abhasit and Papa Prem. So far it's working.

Thailand recalls ambassador to protest Cambodia's appointment of Thaksin

Thailand on Thursday recalled its ambassador to Phnom Penh, Prasas Prasavinitchai, to protest Cambodia's appointment of convicted ex-Thai PMThaksin Shinawatra as economic advisor to Cambodia's Prime Minister Hun Sen and his government.

Thai government will demand for reviews of all bilateral agreements Thailand has with Cambodia, according to the statement issued on Thursday.

Thai Ambassador to Phnom Penh Prasart is scheduled to return to Bangkok at 3pm.


Thailand cancels MOU with Cambodia on overlapping continental shelf area : Kasit

Dispute not good for Asean : Singapore

Singapore on Friday expressed its concern over the ongoing conflict between Thailand and Cambodia following Cambodia's appointment of convicted ex-Thai PM Thaksin Shinawatra as economic adviser.

Singapore's Foreign Ministry urged that both neighbors to find solution to end the dispute quickly.
"It is not good for Asean. We hope that both our friends will keep that larger interest ofAsean in mind and find a way to resolve their differences quickly in a spirit of good neighbourliness," it said in a statement.

PM's popularity soars 3 times for downgrading ties




The popularity rating of Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva has tripled after his decisive action to downgrade the diplomatic ties with Cambodia, Abac Poll said in a survey released on Friday.

In comparison to 23.3 per cent in the survey in September, Abhisit's popularity leaped to 68.6 per cent.

The prime minister was most popular in the South (88.2 per cent), followed by the Central Region (68.9 per cent), Bangkok (68.8 per cent) and the North (64.6 per cent).

About 53.1 per cent in the Northeast voiced support for his leadership.

Factors attributing to the rise in popularity include the sentiment against Cambodian's attack on the Thai judicial system and the concern for consequences of the Cambidian's appointment of fugitive ex-premier Thaksin Shinawatra as adviser.

Thailand politicians act like a little kid. First of all Abhasit just barked about ASEAN unity and did the opposite of what he was trying to preach, what a two face loser. What do you gain by recalling your ambassador? Nothing, any dispute will be the same. 3 years from now ladyboy has to send their ambassador back because they want to have a relationship again. well back to square one.


Abhasit approval is around Bangkok only, and bangkok make up 1/6 of the total population. they are the minority. He got his premiership due to coup and papa Prem, otherwise he'll be just another opposition party that got some votes.

New election is the way to go, if he thinks he has people supports; then he'll win again, but the boy scares to lose his power. What a little jek puppet. true story.

I hope he'll give the same bussiness advice as he gave to Manchester City...

I didn't know you're this naive. Thaksin will not have much impact on Hun Sen government, his post is insignificant. Hun Sen is trying to piss Thailand off and it's working. Abhasit is falling for it too, he's more like a PAD and Junta puppet, and can not stand up on his own ground. Well, that how he got his power in the first place, by relying on other groups. By appointing Thaksin, Hun Sen is trying to rally his people, and have his case to win the next election and be seen as Khmer savor over aggression siamese.

Funny how some jek members around here declaring that thailand is richer, better than cambodia. We can take down cambodia any time, but we don't want to bee seen as bully to little country.
