Parinya Charoenphol fought his way to the top in the macho world of Thai kickboxing. Then he became a woman. Does she like the movie about her life?

In terms of plot twists, it's undeniably brilliant. A poor boy from a village in Thailand overcomes his natural timidity and gentleness to become a champion kickboxer - but only so he can afford a sex change. It would also be preposterous were it not true. The new Thai film, Beautiful Boxer, is the story of Parinya "Nong Toom" Charoenphol, an authentic star in Thailand and one of the most controversial figures to emerge in international sport.

I just finished watching the film. It was really good, but I'd seen her on the telly before I watched the movie. How cool is it that her parents were so accepting? It was just uh...cool. icon_smile.gif

She can still stick her heels up you where the sun don't shine. Just think about it...She's built like a man, is a genius when it comes to Muay Thai yet she has the hormones of a woman! eek.gif

Loved this movie. I watched it during the summer hols when it screened in KL 2 years ago.

It was only later that I found out that the real Nong Toom had a cameo appearance in the movie icon_redface.gif

It was a talkie scene even! The one where Nong Toom was getting a facial or something, I think when he first arrives in Bangkok. The beautician who was giving out beauty tips while Nong Toom was lying on the chair was the real Nong Toom herself! icon_smile.gif

Most trannys want to be called "she".

They're not going to go through all the effort of hormone treatment and surgery only to still be addressed as a man. icon_neutral.gif

I just watched this movie last week and thought it was really good. Acting was good, story ran at a smooth pace, some touching moments, and some funny moments. Gets an A in my book. biggthumpup.gif

It's funny how in the movie that the match against the pro-wrestler was long and brutal while in real life, it ended pretty quickly.

She has very strong mind and I like the way she said to the boy who act like her on the muayThai state that
"we should not forgot what we really want and what we fight for"

I want to staring her for Asianfinest

I just watched the movie last night on Mnet, what a great and moving real-life story. It's very buddhist the message of Nong Toom. It's her karma to be who she is in this life and her parents, her boxing coach, her audience and even the monks let her live out her karma, instead of placing morally restrictions on her ..

bawling.gif bawling.gif

Does anyone remember which scene did the real Nong Toom appear for her cameo appearance?

I agree with Aero, she should be featured as AF celebrity for Thailand! biggthumpup.gif

OIC! Thx malaccan! biggrin.gif

BTW, the movie was a winner of two Thai ‘Oscars’ for Best Actor and Best Makeup. The film had its international premiere at the Berlin International Film Festival. It has since garnered 10 international awards to date including Best Feature Film awards from Milan, Brussels, Montreal and Torino plus a string of other awards from Los Angeles, San Sebastian, Seattle, Oslo and India.

Surprisingly, I have not had a chance to watch it yet. But I will.

My favorite movie is "The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert".

I'm not sure if you have seen it.

But, I'm sure you will like it. It is a classic. biggthumpup.gif

Try http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Adventure...n_of_the_Desert.

"The thin red line " was totally crap. I 've never seen "Battle of the Bulge" though. I recommend you "Apocalypse Now" for an anti-war movie. It is 1 of 50 movies you have to watch before you got shot. embarassedlaugh.gif

There were also depictions of the hardships of the lives of nomads. Nong Toom's family were nomads who had to roam the country to look for work, til they eventually settled in Chiang Mai to be lychee farmers. I loved the scenes of the temple festival, the traditional thai dancing and muay thai boxing (contrast between men and women), the reverence to the monks and the travelling monks, really Anatta, without going into too much metaphysics, it's one of the most beautiful movies I have seen on the human condition.

An English Word A Day, today , presents "nomad".

A nomad is "someone who does not lead a settled life but moves from place to place, usually seeking pasture for herds of grazing animals"

Thanks Tangawizi for my new word of today. icon_smile.gif

Speaking about "travelling monks", I have not seen any of them for a long time. A well known monk "Luang Por Koon" was a travelling monk when he was young. icon_wink.gif

Tangawizi , do you like the movie because it is in someway similar to your life, right? biggrin.gif

Are you planing to have your sex changed? Or have you? embarassedlaugh.gif laugh.gif

Anyway, I will rent the movie if I have time. icon_wink.gif

You are welcome Anatta...

What does a travelling monk do? Does he live like a hermit?

And why do u want me to have a sex change to become a guy? I don't need that because many people on this board think I am one 555555

I like the movie because its very Thai and buddhist. It's not seedy at all.

Is that a new word for you, Anatta? Seedy? naughty.gif

To have a sex change from guy to girl is easier ,cuz it easier to develop virgina and fake boobs

On the other hand from girl to guy is harder and more painful cuz u need to cut your breast and the hardest part is making the younger brother stand up. Even some men need viagra embarassedlaugh.gif In d end you may pay a million to buy the bicycle with a flat tire

Well, a travelling monk is simply a travelling monk. duh2.gif No he don't live like a hermit {this word is new to me too}. This kind of monk is who want to see the world that Buddha been thru not just memmorizing words and call himself a monk. . He would go to any places he wanted to go. He meditates. He gives up the luxury of a soft bed, TV, radio , internet and pr0ns. embarassedlaugh.gif

Yeah. I googled "seedy". I learned many words to day. biggthumpup.gif

I think I may not like it if it is very Thai and Buddhist. icon_sad.gif
