Asian
Pacific American Heritage Month at Macy's 2007
On
May 1st 2007, the Coalition of Asian Pacific Americans kicked-off the
Asian Pacific American Heritage Month at the Macy's flagship Herald Square
store with a panel discussion on "Asians in Media and Entertainment".
Nancy Moran, Editor-in-Chief, of Altra Magazine was tapped to moderate
the discussion. The panel consisted of four prominent Asian American broadcasters
and actors. The panelist for this event are:
- Kristine Johnson: co-anchor of CBS 2 News at Noon. She is also
the recipient of two Emmy nominations.
- Sandy Endo: is a second generation Japanese-American. She is
a reporter for NY1 and a member of the New York chapter of the Asian American
Journalist Association.
- Shazia Khan: is a second generation Indian-American. She is also
a reporter for NY1.
- James Kyson Lee: is one of the fastest growing Asian stars in
TV, film, and on stage. You probably know him best from the hit TV series;
Heroes.
The event was held at Macy's on 34th street Herald Square in New York
City. It started off with a fantastic lion dance performance by The Bergen
Chinese School Lion Dance Troupe. Nancy Moran then introduced the four
panelist. Each of them went on to discuss the struggles that they encounter
as an Asian in TV and film media, and how we can improve on how Asians
are portrayed in media for the future. There was also a Q&A from the
audience to the panelist. Be sure to check out our videos to see the informative
discussion. Everyone was able to network while Asian food/snacks were
served after the panel was finished.
Asian Pacific American Heritage Month is celebrated in May to commemorate
the contributions of people of Asian and Pacific Islander descent in the
United States.
